Chimney Inspection Checklist

With warmer weather approaching, it’s time for spring cleaning. But don’t forget to include your fireplace and chimney in your cleaning regimen. Regular cleanings and inspections can help prevent hazards like chimney fires, unpleasant odors, and decreased performance from a dirty and clogged chimney. To ensure optimal efficiency and safety, follow our Chimney Inspection Checklist.

Level 1 Inspection

During this inspection, your chimney service technician will examine the readily accessible portions of your chimney exterior and interior including attics, crawl spaces and basements. He will look for basic soundness of the chimney structure, flue lining, and appliance installation and connections. He will also check that the chimney is free of combustible materials and obstructions.

Level 2 Inspection

When a Level 1 inspection suggests hidden hazards, or when changes to your fireplace or chimney system occur, a Level 2 inspection is required. This in-depth inspection includes everything from a Level 1 but additionally, your chimney service technician will examine the concealed portions of your chimney structure and flue liner with special tools if necessary. He will also check that the chimney is properly vented to avoid corrosive acid rain.

A good chimney sweep should always check to see that your home’s smoke and carbon monoxide detectors are installed and working properly. He should also check to make sure your fire extinguisher is close by in case of a chimney fire. He will also examine the firebox, damper and grate for signs of wear, damage or corrosion.
